The swingarm can be protected in several ways. Think of a hugger, loose fender or a complete cover of carbon for example. By properly protecting the swingarm, you can prevent damage from stone chips, which can cause the paint to peel off.
For racing models we also have a complete carbon cover. This cover also protects the swingarm during a fall because the carbon is hit first.
