1. Locate your bike's battery and the connection for the alarm (XDWA).
Tools needed:
- 10mm wrench or socket wrench
- Torx T40 (optional)
To install the CanSmart, remove the driver and passenger seats. If your bike has heated seats, disconnect the seat heater connections under both the driver and passenger seats.
The Cansmart for the R1300GS must be connected to the motorcycle battery and to the (XDWA) connector.
The only tools required are a 10mm wrench or socket wrench to loosen the battery bolts.

3. Connecting the Battery cables from the Cansmart
Connecting the Cansmart to the battery is easy. Disconnect the battery cables. ALWAYS disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last. This way you will avoid possible short circuits if a tool connected to the positive terminal touches the metal frame of the motorcycle. Connect the battery cable from the Cansmart, reconnect the battery terminals in reverse order (positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal). The Cansmart's LED should be solid green for about a minute before the Cansmart goes into sleep mode and the green LED turns off. |
Routing the wires and finding a suitable location for your Cansmart depends on several factors and your preference. Make sure the wires are routed securely so they don't chafe or pinch over time. If necessary, secure them with cable ties.
Suggested locations for your Cansmart are shown in the images above (tucked into a side panel) or below for easier access.
