Worldwide recall on the BMW R1300GS variocases

BMW Motorrad has halted worldwide sales of the so-called Vario side panniers for the new R1300GS and urged owners not to ride with them, as the closure may not work correctly. This may cause the lid to open or come off the case/motorbike while riding.

"The trunk lid appears fully closed, but the latch hooks may not be hooked in correctly. In the case of such an error, the trunk lid may open and fall off while driving." - RDW recall register

 

Touratech

The special feature of the plastic BMW vario side cases on the R1300GS is that they can be made wider and narrower with a sliding mechanism. As recently as late 2023, accessory manufacturer Touratech proudly announced that the ones sold as original BMW accessories, new Vario trunk set is "engineered and made by Touratech"..

The recall was also registered today in the RDW recall register in the Netherlands, which does not mention the number of cases sold. In the USA it is about 1600 already delivered pannier sets, according to the documents filed there surrounding the recall through the NHTSA. The US documentation for dealers (pictured) also shows that no immediate solution has yet been found.
